A suspect who died during a car chase in Decatur County on February 24th allegedly called 911 on himself.

On February 24th, around 7am, Jennings County Dispatch received a 911 call from a male subject that was reporting a possible intoxicated driver on Highway 3 at the fair grounds. Dispatch received a description of the vehicle but when they asked for the callers name he hung up.

Sgt. Megel heard the dispatch and decided to drive to the north side of town in case the suspect vehicle came south of Highway 3.  That’s when Megel discovered the vehicle sitting cross ways in the middle of Highway 3 near 300 North. As Megel drove up to the vehicle, the driver fled which began a pursuit and eventually ended with the suspect intentionally crashing head on into another vehicle in Decatur County.

The following investigation revealed the initial 911 call was made by the suspect, Matthew Henderson.  The call was made from his cell phone while he was sitting in the fair grounds parking lot. Police believe Henderson fictitiously reported himself as the intoxicated driver in an attempt to lure police into a pursuit.
